Combining your screen and your heat source
The focal point of a modern Australian living room usually features two things: the television and the fireplace. Naturally, homeowners want to stack them on the same wall to create a clean, unified aesthetic. A frequent question we receive from customers planning a renovation or new build, is whether it is actually safe to mount a television directly above a gas fireplace.
The short answer is yes. However, getting it right requires strict adherence to manufacturer clearances and smart structural planning.
How to avoid melting your telly
Televisions and extreme heat do not mix. If a screen is exposed to the direct rising heat from a gas unit, the internal components will degrade, melting the casing and voiding your electronics warranty.
Every gas heater comes with specific, non-negotiable clearance requirements outlined by the manufacturer. These rules dictate exactly how far combustible materials, and electronics, must sit from the heat source. For some units, a simple non-combustible mantelpiece is enough to deflect the rising heat away from the screen. For others, the requirements are far more rigid.
Planning your custom heating layout
When you are designing a bespoke installation, the structure of the wall itself plays a major role in protecting your television.
Recessing the televisionÂ
One highly effective method is building a custom recess for the TV. By setting the screen back into the wall cavity, the rising heat from the fireplace passes safely in front of the screen rather than hitting it directly.
Choosing the right fireplaceÂ
Not all gas units are designed for this kind of setup. Modern linear gas fireplaces are often engineered specifically with television mounting in mind. Some advanced units use specialised flueing and heat distribution technology to push the hot air forward and down into the room, keeping the wall directly above the fire completely cool.
